Water Appreciation Day was a success!

A fun day was had by all. We ate lunch at Browne’s Irish Market, which was delicious and was somewhere we’ve been wanting to try for quite a while now. Then a trip to Costco, a nap for the young man, and we were off again. We went over to Kaleidoscope which is also somewhere we’ve been wanting to go forever now. It was great! It was 40 minutes of chaotic creativity — awesome inside with art project stations all over the room. Nick was pretty overwhelmed but had a wonderful time anyway. But mostly we were there for my mom because it was her day (in thanks for all the water!) and she’s been waiting a long time to play at Kaleidoscope. She made a card for baby Zoey and helped Nick make a card, color a key, etc! I really want to make a puzzle next time we go because we ran out of time today. Here’s the evidence:

Anyone care to venture a guess about what they’re doing in this picture?

March 26, 2007

Did you know that today is a national holiday? Today is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! So in honor of this very special day, I have.

Happy Water Appreciation Day!

We have an absolutely wonderful water delivery service around here. They deliver full bottles of the most delicious water directly to our house, and they are always careful to make sure we never run out. Um, and it’s all free!

How can you get in on this sweet deal, you ask? You can’t! Our water is delivered personally by my wonderful mother and step-father! So in honor of this very special day,

THANK YOU!!!!

The first hurdle of parenthood that officially has me stumped

School.

Who ever thought sending a kid to school would be so complicated? I mean Public or Private or Montessori or Waldorf or Charter or what? When should he start? The Montessori school I visited last week wants him to start May 1st, of course that school also wants me to pay them $5600 per school year for him to do so.

When I visited the very prestigious Global Montessori Academy on the Plaza last week I thought I would be impressed, but I wasn’t. I thought it was odd at best — I watched a group of toddlers sit around a table, silently eating their lunches and drinking water out of little cups. I got a tour of their four classrooms and an explanation about how they teach, about how each skill must be mastered and demonstrated for the teacher before they are allowed to move on to the next one. Nick and my Mom were both scolded for playing with a toy that was “too advanced” and difficult to put together. It was a cube made of wooden blocks people. It was a TOY. I did not take an immediate liking to their system to say the least.

I have a friend who has taught school for a number of years and when I asked her opinion she said she was not a big fan of Montessori and that she feels they don’t foster creativity and that kids who want to play a lot spend most of their time in trouble. This does NOT seem like the right environment for Nick!

She advised me to check out the theory of Multiple Intelligences. After giving it some thought Mike and I both decided that we think Nick is predominately strongest in Spatial Intelligence and Body/Kinesthetic. We need to do a lot more research but we think that public school will be the best choice for him, possibly with a start in a Waldorf preschool when he’s around three years old. Again the only problem is money! Dang, school is expensive!

I’m going to tour the Westwood View Elementary School soon because it seems to be well rated and is only about a mile from our house (so is the Pembroke Academy where he’ll definitely go if we can just win that stinkin’ lottery already!). The problem is that any school I tour has a lot to live up to because I went to a wonderful school called Leal Elementary in Urbana, Il. I wish I could send him there but that would be a little bit of a commute.

Did you notice?

Hey! I have a new theme!

I really liked the last theme but almost no one could figure out the comments so I decided to switch. This one makes me feel… Warm and Dry I guess (that’s the name of this design). Like I would if I were snuggled up in a blanket by the fireplace, drinking a cup of hot chocolate and staring at the flowery wallpaper of my ski cottage. I think I need a vacation. And maybe I need to learn how to ski.

In other news we watched “Stranger Than Fiction” a couple days ago, and that movie is AWESOME. It made me happy and sad and hopeful all at the same time and I loved it. How can you not love a movie where the two guys from the Sonic ads work in the office with Will Ferrell? And Maggie Gyllenhaal is just amazing and completely captivating as she is in most of her movies. I think she is my favorite actress because she reminds me of my sister (especially in this role) and also is in a lot of interesting and visually stunning movies. Another favorite of mine is “Secretary” which you also should watch immediately as long as you’re fairly open-minded with your movie selections. And yes, I know it stars James Spader but I actually even liked him in this role which is something I NEVER saw happening. I still can’t believe it. Anyhoo, if you’re not a Will Ferrell fan you should watch this movie anyway because it is very different than his usual lighter fare (which I also enjoy).

Okay enough blabbering for now. We had a big day today but that is a story for another entry. Maybe tomorrow unless Nick wakes me up 17 times tonight, which is entirely possible because of the teething. Oh god the teething…
