Toxic.

A while back my mom and I were discussing about the Toxic Gas Theory being a possible cause for SIDS and my mixed feelings about the validity of this theory. It seems now that this information is spreading around the web and more people are starting to question traditional crib mattresses, which I think is a good thing regardless of how I feel about the Toxic Gas Theory. I do believe that all the flame retardants and plastics in crib mattresses are not good for our kids, especially given the amount of time most kids spend on them on a daily basis. Not MY kids, because MY kids don’t sleep, but that’s another post entirely.

5 Minutes for Mom just did an interview with a woman who owns an online store that sells natural baby products, HealthyChild.com. Reading their interview rekindled my interest in organic, chemical-free mattresses for all of us. More and more lately I want to get all the lead, PVC, pthalates, pesticides, etc, etc, ETC! out of our home and out of our bodies. We are exposed to so many nasty things that we have no control of that I think we need to take control of the things we can. Namely food, bedding, clothing — think pajamas. Kid’s pajamas are loaded with fire retardants! Why? I mean I know why, but you can’t tell me that the slim chance that the pajamas won’t immediately catch fire cannot outweigh the damage done by having such constant contact with the nasty chemicals. I just wish we could live a healthier existence without having to win the lottery to do it. Why do products that don’t have a bunch of crap added to them have to be so expensive?

I don’t know if I ever told you this. Matthew has issues with polyester. It might be a carryover from me watching too many issues of the Brady Bunch in my youth — and the allergy to polyester carried over to him.

Anyway — when he was an infant, he’d have a rash if he wore polyester (now, he doesn’t wear it — problem solved), and all the kids “flame retardant” PJs were (you guessed it) polyester.

Well, my MIL was very concerned that my child was not sleeping in safe pajamas.

But, as I explained to her

MY CHILD IS NOT SMOKING IN BED — HE CAN WEAR COTTON

(and yes, this can become a problem with little girls and with frilly floaty wide skirted nightgowns and space heaters without proper coverings — but that’s really not a sleepwear issue now, is it)

Apparently Matthew is one of the cool kids since I’m allergic to Polyester too.
